| I have a home office in my basement and this time of year it gets very cold. I'd like to use an electric space heater but I'm hesitant because I'm afraid of fires. What can I do to stay safe AND warm this winter? |
Space heaters can be a great way to supplement your heating needs and keep you comfortable in your home or office. Following a few simple safety rules should put your mind at ease. First, make sure your electric heater has the UL mark. This means it has been tested by an independent testing lab. Ideally your space heater should have temperature controls and automatic shut off.
Space heaters should never be plugged into an extension cord or power strip! Plug your space heater directly into an outlet and it should be grounded with a three pronged plug or double insulated. Check the cord regularly for any signs of exposed or damaged wires. Also check that the plug fits securely in the outlet.
Place your space heater on a flat surface with at least 3 feet of clear space around it. Never set your heater on soft furniture, such as a couch as it may fall or tip over.
Most importantly, remember to turn off your space heater when you leave the room and unplug it when you leave your office for the day!
If you work in an office outside the home, check with your safety manager for approval before using a space heater.
